Managing Stress: Skye’s Journey to Finding Wellness with Girls Inc.

Experiencing stress is a human experience. However, there are ways to manage it.  With April being National Stress Awareness Month Girls Inc. Brand Ambassador, Skye, shared her personal journey of managing stress with the support of Girls Inc.

Fifth grade was a stressful academic year for Skye. Luckily, she had a therapist who introduced her to Girls Inc. Of Orange County for their mindfulness programming.

“At Girls Inc., I got to communicate with other girls my age who were going through the same experience,” Skye stated. “As my academic involvement increased, Girls Inc. continued to support me by showing me new ways to improve my mental well-being.”

Skye had the opportunity to attend Eureka! Which is a unique five-year college readiness program that provides girls with a gentle introduction to STEM, personal development, sports, mentorship, career exploration. At Eureka!, she learned about the Pomodoro Technique, which helps prevent burnout on long workdays.

“The help that Girls Inc. provided for us girls at Eureka! prompted us to form a passion project to promote positive mental wellbeing amongst a teenage demographic.

This experience showed her that stress-relief comes in different forms. It is not only about breathing exercises and meditating, but it can also be fun things too, like singing and dancing! Being taught this one exercise has opened Skye to the idea of trying other stress techniques.

“In the future, and once I have more free time, I would love to commit to journaling to track my mental health and my experiences.”

When life gets overwhelming, we can all learn from Skye and explore different ways to cope with stress. Sometimes, that might even mean taking a few minutes to do those things that bring you joy. In Skye’s case that was singing and dancing it out. Ultimately, our emotional well-being is what matters most. To learn more about Girls Inc. Mindful programming visit here.
