A Gateway to Comprehensive Sex Education
The Real Education for Healthy Youth Act (REHYA) is a bill that would, for the first time, establish federal grants for Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE). CSE is medically accurate and complete. It is age and developmentally appropriate, and evidence-informed instruction that is non-shaming, LGBTQ+ inclusive, and culturally sensitive. CSE also includes discussion of consent and healthy relationships.
Our country has wasted millions of dollars on abstinence-only sex education. This programming leaves youth in the dark. It also cloaks sexuality in shame, keeping many survivors from coming forward to report sexual assault. Providing youth with information that is medically accurate and complete delays sexual initiation and encourages those who are sexually active to make safer choices. We need to give youth full information so that they can make healthy, informed decisions.
