“I cannot imagine what my life would have been if I had not had Girls Inc. and the support of the staff”
Meet Mekkah, an alumna of Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region. Mekkah shares about the pivotal role Girls Inc. has played in her life and how she pays her Girls Inc. Experience forward.
How did Girls Inc. help you grow as a ‘leader’ in your own life?
Girls Inc. provided invaluable opportunities to develop my leadership skills through various after-school programs. Focusing on building self-confidence and self-expression, they encouraged me to voice my opinions, share my ideas, and stand up for my beliefs. The dedicated staff at Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region were exemplary role models, emphasizing the importance of resilience and perseverance. Meghan and Diana, both full-time staff at Girls Inc. and firefighters in the community, inspired me to set ambitious goals and pursue them with unwavering determination. They never gave up on us. Their stories and guidance taught me about the significance of community service and advocating for those in need. Meghan and Diana emphasized genuine leadership involves empathy, compassion, and a solid commitment to making a positive difference. Their unwavering support boosted my confidence and belief in my capabilities. Girls Inc. was more than a mentorship program; it was a haven where dreams were nurtured and every girl’s voice was valued. They knew your name and your story. The collaborative environment fostered empowerment and a sense of belonging, showing that we could achieve remarkable things together. This experience has shaped me into a proactive and empathetic leader, impacting my personal life and my community. It has instilled a clear sense of purpose and determination that influences my decisions and endeavors.
What is your favorite Girls Inc. memory?
There are countless memories to look back on, from sleepovers in the gym and hosting spaghetti night fundraisers to advocating for women’s equal pay at the Capitol. One of the fondest memories I cherish is playing basketball against the staff. One of the staff members would coach us teens, and then we would compete against the staff. It was very competitive but also very friendly—neither team wanted to lose.
What are you up to now?
My main priority at the moment is creating and cherishing memories with my son. In my professional capacity, I serve as the Payroll and Human Resources Liaison at the Schenectady City School District. Furthermore, I act as the board secretary for the Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region board of directors and volunteer with the Girls Inc. Alumnae Association as a community builder, which are members that interact and encourage more activity in the online community and welcome new members and create opportunities for dialogue and feedback.
What advice would you give to girls knowing what you know now?
First and foremost, always believe in yourself and your abilities. Confidence is crucial in navigating life’s challenges and opportunities. Secondly, surround yourself with supportive and positive people who uplift and encourage your growth. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes; they are invaluable learning experiences that help you grow stronger and wiser. Remember that education is critical, so never stop learning. Whether through formal education, reading, or exploring new interests, continually expanding your knowledge will open doors and uplift you to make informed decisions. Always, remember to take care of your mental and physical health. It’s okay to prioritize self-care and set boundaries to protect your well-being. Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it, and never feel ashamed to talk about your struggles. Lastly, embrace your uniqueness. The world needs diverse voices and perspectives; you have something unique. Be kind to yourself and others, and always strive to impact wherever you go positively.

Are there aspects of the Girls Inc. Experience that helped you grow as a storyteller or someone who knows the power of honing stories to make change?
Participating in the Girls Inc. Experience profoundly influenced my development as a storyteller and an individual who recognizes the transformative impact of stories. The supportive community encouraged me to explore my voice, share my unique perspectives, and build confidence and authenticity in my storytelling. Furthermore, the focus on applying storytelling to real-world scenarios, like advocating for social change and raising awareness about crucial topics, instilled a sense of duty and meaning in me. Experience went beyond teaching the technicalities of storytelling; it highlighted the significant impact of storytelling on personal development and societal progress. It empowered me to use my voice effectively and motivated me to contribute positively to the world through well-crafted narratives.
Is there anything further you’d share about pro-girl spaces/environments or being part of a community?
Absolutely! Pro-girl spaces and environments are incredibly inspiring and can profoundly impact personal growth and community building. These spaces foster a sense of belonging, where girls and women can share their experiences, support each other, and celebrate their achievements without fear of judgment or discrimination. Being part of a community, especially one that champions gender equality, provides numerous benefits. It encourages collaboration, where individuals can learn from each other and build networks beyond the immediate group. Pro-girl environments promote self-confidence and resilience. Knowing that there is a safe space where one’s voice is heard and valued can significantly boost self-esteem. It also teaches the importance of solidarity and collective action, showing that people can drive meaningful change when they come together with a common purpose. Ultimately, pro-girl spaces create a world where everyone can thrive, regardless of gender.
