What is your favorite Girls Inc. memory?
I would come anytime after school or during the summer to hang out with the friends that I made while I was there. I loved going to play basketball during free time, cooking, and being in the teen room, learning something new.
How did Girls Inc. help you grow as a ‘leader’ in your own life?
It inspired me to be a better advocate and to encourage the young people around me so that they can be better and successful too.
What are you up to now?
I am currently a Residential Skills Coach for an organization called 91 Place, which serves homeless young adults in Indianapolis ages 18-24.
What advice would you give to girls knowing what you know now?
No matter your situation or circumstances, you can thrive anywhere and still be a positive shining light for someone else around you.
Is there anything further you’d share around pro-girl spaces/environments or being part of a community?
Girls Inc. was very inspiring for me and I’m glad that I got to be a part of it. I grew as a teen and overcame all of those challenges as an adult. Now, I am able to give back and do what I do best: serve, impact, and encourage others. Girls Inc. had a positive impact on my life because I was able to be a part of something where I could learn and grow as a young woman despite my situation outside of the programming space. They met me where I was at and helped me through my challenges with my growth as a young teen in high school.
What would you like to tell the supporters of Girls Inc.?
Girls Inc. was a part of my life during a tough time. It kept me busy. I was living in shelters during my freshman year of high school while also playing basketball. I accomplished so much during that time receiving many awards from school academics, extracurricular activities, and Girl of the Month. The biggest one of all was in 2017 when I was 16 and was nominated for the Strong, Smart, and Bold Young Woman Award. Receiving the Strong, Smart, and Bold Young Woman Award was shocking and a proud moment for me. Never had I received anything like it so I definitely felt honored.
