Honoring Trailblazing Black Women: How Shirley Chisholm and Ruby Bridges Inspire the New Generation

Each year, Black History Month celebrates the achievements of African Americans and acknowledges their significant contributions to American history. The month of February is dedicated to honoring these accomplishments. To honor the Black Women who have made an impact on various generations, Girls Inc. Brand Ambassadors Trinity and Ashlyn share their reflections and discuss two women who have greatly inspired them.

Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first to seek the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, has been a source of inspiration for Trinity by breaking political barriers.

“As an aspiring criminal defense attorney only 2% of Black Women make up the field. I am reminded of a quote by Chisolm, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” She has taught me that it is okay to be the first in a lot of spaces. Unwavering grit and passion for the betterment of her community is truly inspiring,” Trinity shared.

Ruby Bridges was a pioneering figure in the Civil Rights Movement, becoming the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South at just six years old, facing immense adversity with remarkable bravery.

“As a young woman, her narrative has had a significant influence on me and inspired me in several important ways. First, Ruby has shown me the value of perseverance by facing fear and animosity head-on with unyielding resolution. In my own life, I frequently find strength in Ruby’s capacity to maintain focus and determination in the face of extreme difficulties, whether it be in the classroom or when pursuing personal objectives. Her example serves as a reminder to me that I should never let fear stop me from taking on new tasks,” Ashlyn shared.

Ruby Bridges not only demonstrated resilience and perseverance, but her experiences have also opened doors for a better life for Ashlyn and other young women of color.

Ashlyn also stated, “I can attend more open and equal schools because of Ruby Bridges’ pioneering work. As a young woman of color, her experience has shaped my self-perception and inspired me to advocate for change, just as she did. I’ve learned from Ruby’s example that bravery and tenacity can have a significant impact on the world despite hardship.”

As we honor Black History Month, we acknowledge the enduring influence of trailblazing women like Ruby Bridges and Shirley Chisholm, whose bravery, tenacity, and commitment continue to inspire generations to come.
