Celebrating BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month

Celebrating BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month

Each July, we honor trailblazer Bebe Moore Campbell’s legacy through Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Awareness Month, previously known as “National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month.” Bebe Moore Campbell was an American author, journalist, teacher, and mental health advocate who shed light on the mental health needs of Black and other underrepresented communities. Her ability to tell impactful stories highlighting themes of racism, mental health, and family left a lasting mark on this world and is a foundation for much of the work that continues in support of BIPOC mental health. Girls Inc. inspires girls, especially those from under-resourced communities and Black and brown girls, to thrive and take on leadership roles, all while advocating to end inequity and discrimination. This month acknowledges the wide range of discrimination, oppression, and systemic racism, underscoring the ongoing need to support the mental health of the BIPOC community.

With the Center For Disease Control’s report on the status of girls’ mental health across the nation, Girls Inc. National Brand Ambassadors, representing girls’ voices from across the Girls Inc. Network, share the top 10 ways they manage their own mental health. The list serves as inspiration for other girls and is not intended to replace medical advice.
