Honest, Accurate Sex Education Benefits Girls

Girls Inc. is heartened to see some communities in Texas shifting their sex education policies to emphasize decision-making skills and medically correct information ("More Schools Choose to Teach Abstinence-Plus," The New York Times, September 16, 2011).

A more comprehensive approach to sex education is essential in countering dangerous misinformation. It is invaluable for teens and especially girls, who face the toughest consequences of potential pregnancy, higher rates of some sexually transmitted infections, and stereotypes about ruined reputation.

Girls are still told that they can't get pregnant their first time or that substituting plastic wrap for condoms is safe. Many do not have a knowledgeable, caring adult to contradict these lies and grow into misinformed women with distressing results. In a 2009 National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy study, 70% of unmarried young women reported that "many of their friends have had an unplanned pregnancy."

Our Girls Inc. Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy® program is guided by a set of core values, including our belief that parents are the primary sexuality educators. We teach age-appropriate communication skills, the hallmarks of healthy relationships, plus ways and reasons to avoid pregnancy and STDs. Girls learn to separate myths from facts and practice standing up to pressures. They also discover that the possibilities for their futures are endless, and are motivated to make informed choices to stay safe and fulfill their aspirations.
