A Note to Parents

A Note to Parents

Girls Inc. is deeply committed to protecting the privacy and safety of our online audience. Our website is a place for girls to participate in educational activities, read inspiring stories and speak out on issues that matter to them. We encourage you to visit the Girls Inc. website with the girls in your life.

Here are some frequently asked questions about what steps we take to insure that our website continues to be a safe and supportive community for girls.

What information do you collect from girls?
There are three different ways for girls to contact us through our website: feedback forms, contact forms and our e-update sign up forms.

Feedback forms - Throughout the site, girls can provide their anonymous feedback through polls, quizzes and surveys. For these types of activities, we will not ask for any personally identifiable information (i.e. last name, address, email address).

Contact forms - If a girl is seeking an answer to a specific question, she can submit that question through a contact form. On this form, girls are asked to provide their email address so that our staff can respond. Once we have responded, the email address is deleted from our database. Girls Inc. does not store any email addresses except for those of girls who have signed up to receive our regular e-update.

E-update Sign Up forms - Girls can sign up to receive the Girls Inc. e-update, a regular email that contains information about new content on the Girls Inc. website. This content is specific to Girls Inc. online activities, features, polls and quizzes and will never contain any advertising or third party content. In order to be added to this mailing list, girls are asked to provide their email address, which is stored in our secure database. Each e-update provides girls with the option to unsubscribe from the list.

Do you notify parents when a girl signs up to receive your e-update?
Girls Inc. adheres to the multiple online contact rule of COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act) by asking girls to provide their age before they sign up for our e-update. Girls who indicate that they are under the age of 13 are asked to provide a separate email address for a parent. Girls Inc. then sends the parent an email with information about the newsletter and the option to unsubscribe. At any time, a parent can unsubscribe and the girl will be removed from our list.

Do you share information with outside parties?
Girls Inc. never shares information with third parties. The information and data we collect from girls is used only to fulfill requests and never for any commercial purposes.

Does Girls Inc. offer message boards?
Girls Inc. does offer message boards. We believe that girls benefit from an online community, but we take extended measures to be sure that our boards are completely safe, secure and COPPA compliant. Registration is anonymous, with no personally identifiable information collected from our users. All posts are screened by a Girls Inc. staff member before they appear on our site, insuring that the content of the posts is appropriate for our audience.
