Literacy
Reading at grade level by third grade is perhaps the single most important predictor of high school graduation. With a private donor grant, we drew on affiliate-created formal and informal
reading programs
to develop a national literacy initiative. This led to a major investment from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to further refine our approach and work with outside experts to pilot a K-3 literacy program based on partnerships with local schools. [X]
When I look over the past summer, I can see that the girls made such tremendous progress. When girls started they could not identify letters of the alphabet. Now they can identify the letters; differentiate between upper and lower case; and tell me what sounds the letters make.
The read alouds and the activities that go along with them really spark girls’ interest in reading. They learn that stories are interesting and entertaining. Autumn Lewis,

Literacy is a critical skill that must be mastered for success. I was impressed by the Girls Inc. connection to schools and the alignment of the curriculum for both the in and out of school time.
I am not so nervous about the first day of school because I know my alphabet and I know what a question mark is. I am ready.
