Reading at grade level by third grade is perhaps the single most important predictor of high school graduation. With a private donor grant, we drew on affiliate-created formal and informal to develop a national literacy initiative. This led to a major investment from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to further refine our approach and work with outside experts to pilot a K-3 literacy program based on partnerships with local schools.

Literacy is a critical skill that must be mastered for success. I was impressed by the Girls Inc. connection to schools and the alignment of the curriculum for both the in and out of school time.
