Changing STEM Statistics

From a young age, Rica discovered that math was easy for her and that excelling would help her achieve a college education and bright future. At school, Rica’s teachers noticed her intellect and recommended that she skip first grade. Yet other students saw Rica’s smarts as a reason to bully her.

At Girls Inc., she found the safe space to nurture what she called her “nerdy side” and to take risks. “I can try this” turned to “I can do this,” Rica recalls of what she learned at Girls Inc. Here, she joined Girls Inc. Eureka! where she was exposed to college-level math classes, found new challenges and developed career goals.

Rica’s parents prioritized her education from the day they arrived in the U.S. from the Philippines, but neither they nor Rica understood the college admissions process. With the help of Girls Inc. mentors, Rica was guided through SAT prep classes and introduced to scholarships. As a result, she graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Applied Mathematics, where she is currently an MBA candidate.

Today, Rica is a video games producer at Ubisoft Entertainment. As a woman in the tech industry, she is a role model for other girls and is working to change the under-representation of women in gaming and tech.

Coding in the Nation's Capital

Girls Inc. is excited to share our support of Google Made with Code, a social initiative that is creating a coding culture for girls. Through Made with Code, girls are encouraged to write their own future with technology to see that it can take them anywhere!

This holiday season, girls participating in Made with Code have the opportunity to create a design for the National Tree Lighting at the White House. Take a look at some of the designs that Girls Inc. girls made with code.

Girls Inc. Joins The Girl Project

Girls Inc. is proud to partner with The Girl Project, a Glamour initiative that breaks down barriers to secondary education for young women. Girls Inc. was selected for our work providing girls in the U.S. and Canada with a safe environment, research-based programming, and trained staff to ensure girls make healthy decisions, succeed academically, set goals and develop life skills.

Fargana, a Girls Inc. girl, was one of the 2014 Women of the Year Fund Honorees, a group called "The Bravest Girls in the World". Along with Girls Inc. President and CEO Judy Vredenburgh, Fargana shared why this project is so important with The New York Times
