Girls Inc. Helps Laura Discover her True Self Worth

laura_chavez.jpeg

Growing up, Laura felt different from other kids. As a teenager, she was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Unfortunately, her family did not understand her illness and often made her feel like she should be able to control it, leading her to feel isolated and ashamed.

Girls Inc. became that safe haven that Laura needed. Here, she could be herself without fear of being judged and she was given tools to help her cope with mental illness. At Girls Inc. Laura also found the support to overcome an eating disorder; breaking her cycle of running 7 miles and consuming just 100 calories each day.

Her attention shifted from self-doubt and she learned to find her voice as a leader.  Laura participated in the youth leadership council and volunteered at a youth and family center. She was even selected as a Youth STEM Ambassador and attended the White House Science Fair where she met the President!

Today, Laura is a straight “A” student who plans to study biological science in college. Her goal is to become an ER Physician.

“Girls Inc. helped me discover my true self-worth. Being a part of such a positive group made me feel better about myself. The girls didn’t care what I ate or what size I was. But instead they cared about my well-being.”
